Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas”, is a form of conscious sedation that is safe for adults and children. Nitrous oxide helps patients to feel relaxed, less anxious, and stress free while enjoying high quality dental care. If you or a loved one are in need of dental care but are worried or anxious about sitting in the chair, this is the solution for you!
Nitrous oxide when inhaled displaces the oxygen in your lungs and prevents the same level of oxygen to reach the brain. The oxygen deprivation causes patients to feel “loopy” or become “giggly”. The effects only continue as long as the gas is inhaled. Once removed, the effects wear off quickly.
Side effects from laughing gas usually occur only when used for too long or using too much of the gas. Though very rare, there can be some temporary side effects of laughing gas including shivers, dizziness, vomiting or fatigue. We minimize these by ensuring the proper amount of gas is used and by keeping our procedure times down.
